Bulmer & Lumb Group Limited acquires exclusive Huddersfield manufacturer Taylor & Lodge January 2005The Bulmer & Lumb Group is expanding its manufacturing businesses by the acquisition of Huddersfield’s most exclusive fine worsted manufacturer, Taylor & Lodge.
This state of the art weaving and traditional finishing plant at Rashcliffe Mills has been producing the world’s finest fabrics for over 120 years with 70% of production destined for the most discerning fashion houses in Japan and Italy. Its customer base includes such household names as Brioni, Dunhill, Hugo Boss and Ermenegildo Zegna.
Out of the workforce of 50, 20% are employed in the design and development side of the business to ensure the company maintains its leading position in fine worsted fabric design.
Since the successful MBO from Allied Textiles Ltd in 2002 Bulmer & Lumb has been supplying predominantly wool based coloured tops, worsted yarns and fabric from its Bradford Head Office.
The addition of Taylor & Lodge will push fabric sales up to 50% of turnover, but more importantly will enable the group to supply the world’s most discerning and exclusive fashion houses, in many instances with fabrics woven from dyed tops and yarns produced in the group’s UK mills.
Group Managing Director Bill Waterhouse comments: “Our aim is to maintain a strong position in the UK wool textile industry, and joining forces with Taylor & Lodge enables us to achieve this. All of the enlarged group’s very experienced workforce knows we will be successful as long as we produce quality, deliver on time, are at the leading edge of design and technology and keep investing in new equipment when we recognise there is an advantage”.
Gordon Kaye, Managing Director of Taylor & Lodge said: “The merger with Bulmer & Lumb Group is a very positive step and will allow us to continue our export success and develop new business in the UK. This, coupled with the support from the Group, gives us a much more confident future outlook in the continued design and production of traditional fine Huddersfield worsted cloth”.
New Yarn Dyeing Machine July 2004The Bulmer & Lumb Group, Yarn Dyeing Division, ATC Dyers, have just taken delivery of one of the very latest generation of yarn dyeing machines, to add to what is perhaps one of the most advanced facilities in the UK.
The Thies Quattro dyeing machine, made in Germany by Messrs Thies GMBH, is at the forefront of yarn dyeing machine design.
The ‘Quattro’ is split into four separate dyeing kiers which can be coupled in various ways, dependent on order requirements.
The total capacity of the machine, using all four kiers is 36kgs. But it can be run as either 2 x 18kgs, 4 x 9kgs, 1 x 9kgs and 1 x 27kgs.
In each mode, the different weights can be dyed independently to different shades.
British Wool International Quality Awards 1997Innovation Yarn Winner - Bulmer & LumbResearch and development work in respect of spun yarns to further extend the use of British Wool in clothing received a Quality Award for Innovation. By using small amounts of PVA (poly vinyl acrylic ) in a British Wool yarn, it is possible to produce a finer yarn by raising the spinning count. Furthermore, as the PVA cores in the yarn dissolves during finishing, the count of the yarn within a cloth structure becomes even finer which offers tremendous potential for extending the application of British Wools in apparel.British Wool Marketing Board
